Forex Robot Guide: How Automated Trading Works and How to Pick the Best Forex EA

A forex robot promises to trade while you sleep. Some deliver, most do not. This guide explains how forex robots work on MetaTrader 5, how to test one honestly, and the checklist that separates the best forex EA from a well-marketed account killer.

What is a forex robot?

A forex robot is a program that trades a currency or metals market for you. It watches price data, applies a fixed set of rules, and sends buy or sell orders to your broker automatically. On MetaTrader the same tool is called an Expert Advisor (EA). “Robot”, “bot”, “automated trading system” and “EA” all describe the same thing.

The appeal is simple: no hesitation, no revenge trading, no missed sessions. The trade-off is equally simple: the robot will follow its rules even when those rules are wrong. Automation multiplies whatever strategy you give it — good or bad.

How a forex robot works on MT5

You attach the robot to one chart — for example XAUUSD on the H1 timeframe. From that moment the robot receives every price update and runs its decision cycle:

  1. Read the market: price, indicators, volatility, session time, spread.
  2. Evaluate the entry rules: usually only when a candle has closed, to avoid signals that disappear before the bar completes.
  3. Size the position: lot size derived from account equity and the distance to the stop loss.
  4. Send the order with stop loss and take profit attached at the moment of entry.
  5. Manage the trade: break-even, trailing stop, time-based exit, or a hard close.

Everything is deterministic. Same inputs, same behaviour — which is exactly why a robot can be tested on historical data before a single euro is at risk.

The main types of forex robot

Trend following

Enters in the direction of momentum and holds for larger moves. Many small losses, occasional large wins. Psychologically hard, statistically sound when risk is capped.

Mean reversion

Fades stretched moves back to an average. High win rate, but the losing trades are the big ones — a hard stop loss is non-negotiable.

Scalping

Many small trades on tiny edges. Extremely sensitive to spread, commission, latency and broker execution: backtests look far better than live results unless costs are modelled realistically.

Martingale & grid (avoid)

Adds to losing positions to recover the drawdown. Produces beautiful equity curves for months, then erases the account in a single trend. Most “99% win rate” robots belong to this family.

Do forex robots actually work?

Honest answer: a robot works to the exact extent that its underlying strategy has an edge and its risk control survives bad markets. Automation removes emotional mistakes, not market risk. No robot can guarantee a monthly return, and any seller who claims otherwise is telling you what they think you want to hear.

The realistic expectation is a system with a modest positive expectancy, real drawdown periods, and results measured over years rather than weeks. If a drawdown of 15–25% would make you switch the robot off at the worst possible moment, the problem is position size, not the software.

How to test a robot before going live

  1. Backtest with real tick data in the MT5 Strategy Tester, covering several years and at least one high-volatility crisis period. Set realistic spread, commission and slippage — not the broker’s best-case values.
  2. Check the trade list, not just the curve. Look at the worst losing streak, the largest single loss, and whether every trade had a stop loss.
  3. Test out-of-sample. Run the settings on a period the robot was never optimised on. If performance collapses, the parameters were curve-fitted.
  4. Forward test on demo for at least four to eight weeks with your real broker and spread.
  5. Go live small. Start with the minimum risk per trade and increase only after the live behaviour matches the tested behaviour.

Checklist: choosing the best forex EA

  • Verifiable results — a published backtest or live track record you can inspect, not a screenshot.
  • Hard stop loss on every trade, attached at entry.
  • One position at a time — no averaging down, no recovery multipliers.
  • Risk defined as a percentage of equity, so the system scales with the account.
  • A stated maximum drawdown you can accept before you start.
  • Realistic cost modelling — spread, commission and slippage included in the test.
  • Clear documentation and support, with a real person answering questions.
  • No promise of guaranteed profit. Ever.

You can see how this looks in practice on our transparency page and in the risk disclosure.

How to spot a forex robot scam

  • “Guaranteed” or “fixed” monthly percentages.
  • An equity curve that is a straight line with almost no drawdown.
  • Win rates of 95%+ with no explanation of the losing trades.
  • No stop loss, described as a “smart recovery system”.
  • Backtests run on 1-minute OHLC data with zero spread.
  • Anonymous sellers, no company details, payment only in crypto.

Running a robot 24/5 with a VPS

A forex robot only trades while MetaTrader is running and connected. Laptop sleep, a Windows update or a dropped Wi-Fi connection can leave a position unmanaged. A VPS — either MQL5 Virtual Hosting from inside MT5 or an external Windows VPS near your broker’s servers — keeps the terminal online around the clock with low latency.

Install the .ex5 file into MQL5/Experts, restart MT5, drag the robot onto the chart, load the supplied preset, and enable AutoTrading. Step-by-step instructions are on the how it works page.

Frequently asked questions

What is a forex robot?

Software that opens, manages and closes trades automatically according to fixed rules. On MetaTrader 4 and 5 these programs are called Expert Advisors.

Do forex robots actually work?

They execute a strategy with perfect discipline, but they cannot create an edge that does not exist. Robots built on a tested, risk-controlled strategy can work over time; martingale and grid systems usually fail when conditions change.

How do I test a forex robot before using real money?

Multi-year backtest with real tick data and realistic costs, then several weeks on a demo account with your own broker, then live with the smallest possible risk per trade.

What makes the best forex EA?

Verifiable results, a hard stop on every trade, one position at a time, no martingale, an understandable maximum drawdown, and a vendor who publishes results instead of promises.
